Understanding accreditation outcomes.

Every accreditation self-study period is an opportunity for reflection, growth, and continuous improvement. Following an evaluation, the VAIS Board of Directors assigns an accreditation category based on the Accreditation Committee’s recommendation and the school’s demonstrated alignment with the VAIS Standards for Membership. Explore the categories to better understand the possible outcomes of the accreditation process and what each decision means for your school.

  • Candidate for Membership

    Granted when a school successfully completes the onboarding process, Candidate schools work closely with VAIS to build the foundation for the Initial Self-Study and Evaluation. Candidate status typically lasts two years and is subject to change based on scheduling logistics.

  • Provisional Accreditation

    Granted when a school substantially meets the Standards for Membership but must address specific recommendations within an established timeframe. VAIS works collaboratively with schools throughout this process to support continued progress and improvement.

  • Full Accreditation

    Awarded to schools that fully meet the VAIS Standards for Membership and demonstrate a sustained commitment to educational excellence. Full accreditation affirms a school’s mission, governance, academic program, and institutional effectiveness.

  • Conditional Accreditation

    Granted when a fully accredited school presents serious conditions or deficiencies that detract from the quality or integrity of its educational program or operations. At the end of a specified period, if the reasons for conditional status have not been corrected or substantial progress has not been made, the school may be denied accreditation.
