VAIS advances excellence in Virginia's independent schools.

A legacy built on collaboration.

The Virginia Association of Independent Schools was founded on a simple belief: independent schools are stronger when they work together.

Since 1973, VAIS has connected schools across the Commonwealth through a shared commitment to educational excellence. What began as a merger of two school associations has grown into Virginia’s leading organization for independent school accreditation, professional learning, and advocacy, serving a vibrant community of schools united by a common purpose and our mission: VAIS advances excellence in Virginia’s independent schools.

History

On April 30, 1973, 44 member schools and eight provisional members gathered in Charlottesville to establish the Virginia Association of Independent Schools through the merger of the Virginia Association of Preparatory Schools and the Virginia Association of Independent Elementary Schools.

The foundation for VAIS had already been laid. Heads of school known as the Baker’s Dozen met regularly to discuss emerging issues in education. Teachers collaborated through statewide subject matter conferences, while advancement professionals and other school leaders formed their own networks.

VAIS brought these communities together under one organization, creating a stronger, more connected future for Virginia’s independent schools.

Accreditation leadership

Since its founding, accreditation has been central to the work of VAIS.

Today, the VAIS accreditation process is authorized by the Virginia State Board of Education through the Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE) and recognized by the International Council Advancing Independent School Accreditation (ICAISA). This rigorous process helps schools engage in meaningful reflection, continuous improvement, and mission-driven excellence while meeting nationally recognized standards.
